Why Your Wardrobe Needs a Spring Clean
Birds are chirping, flowers are blooming and it’s finally time for a good Spring Clean. But does your wardrobe get any Spring Cleaning love? If not, it should and here’s why:
New research suggests that in the UK alone, there are roughly 3.6 billion pieces of unworn clothing sitting in our closets. Not only is this a prime example of over-consumption, but it also seems that we are actually suffering from ‘too much choice’. Over half of the survey respondents admitted to having ‘wardrobe rage’ when choosing their daily outfit.
So let’s stop wasting time cluttering our closets with things we never really wear and give our wardrobe the good Spring Clean that it deserves.
Here Are Five Tips to Spring Clean Your Wardrobe
1. Have A Plan
Everyone knows that cleaning out your closet can be slightly overwhelming, so go in with a strategy. Is the goal to purge? If so, what kind of closet do you want to create? A minimalist capsule wardrobe with a few key pieces? Or something a little bigger? Take a minute to think about your style, and what you are trying to achieve with this spring clean. This will help you figure out which pieces will be key in your new wardrobe, and which items are adding to the clutter.
2. Take Everything Out of Your Closet
In order to truly clean out your closet, you need to go through every. single. item. It sounds like a big task, but sometimes things need to get a little messy before they can get better. Try sorting your closet into three different piles: Keep, Store, and Say Goodbye.
3. Be Prepared To Let Go
In general, if haven’t worn something in over a year, then it’s time to say goodbye. Of course, there are exceptions for sentimental items, but stay strong in your attempt to create a wardrobe that is entirely filled with favourites. For the items that you no longer want, you can: give to a friend, sell at a second-hand shop, donate to charity or find a textile recycling point near you. Clothes don’t belong in the bin!
4. Store with Care
If you like to store the heavier items from you winter wardrobe -such as coats and big sweaters- then make sure you do so with care! Proper storage will increase the lifespan of your garments, and keep them fresh for next season. Invest in some proper garment bags or storage containers for your winter wardrobe, and make sure everything is clean and neatly folded for optimum storage. (Pro Tip: throw in some lavender with your garments. This will help keep moths away and you’ll be greeted with a lovely scent next winter).
5. Organise Your Closet
After all the hard work of systematically cleaning out your closet, this is arguably the most important step. If your closet is messy, you won’t be able to see all of your options and inevitably, certain pieces will get lost in the back and forgotten.
A clean, organised closet is key in maintaining a well-circulated wardrobe and will make picking out an outfit every morning all the easier. Good Luck!
