Embracing sustainable fashion doesn’t have to be a daunting experience. In fact, it can really be quite simple! To get you started on the right track, check out these tips below.
1. Start With What You Have
A lot of people think that to participate in the sustainable fashion movement, you have to throw away everything you own and buy a whole new sustainably-made wardrobe. We don’t agree. If you already own and love that Zara top, why throw it away? The most sustainable fashion is what you already have in your closet!
2. Organise Your Wardrobe
We are firm believers in the benefits of keeping a tidy wardrobe and think this is a really great way to kick start your sustainable fashion journey. Cleaning out your closet (go here for easy tips) will show you what’s hiding in the back of your closet and give you a better understanding of what you actually own. If you realise that you already have 6 pairs of black jeans, you might be less tempted to buy another pair when one catches your eye.
3. Get Rid of Clothing You *Don’t* Wear
You know that feeling of looking at a full closet, but feeling like you have nothing to wear? If you feel like that, then it’s time to get culling! By cleansing the stuff that you don’t actually wear, you can start to create a wardrobe that you really love. It will also help to show you what gaps you might need to fill. For instance, if you have a ton of skirts but never wear them because you don’t have the right shoes, then maybe shoes should be the next mindful addition to your wardrobe.
4. Find Your Style
There are a ton of benefits to having a good understanding of your own personal style. This doesn't mean you need to create a boring uniform, but knowing what you love will certainly help you better curate new additions to your wardrobe. Furthermore, having a closet full of pieces that can be styled together also helps reduce the number of unworn pieces that never really “go” with anything. Knowing what fits into the style of your wardrobe can also reduce the type of “impulse buys” we may later regret.
5. Educate Yourself
This is arguably the hardest part of your journey into sustainable fashion, but well worth it! If you don’t have much knowledge about the current state of the fashion industry, then take some time to learn a bit more. Watch documentaries like “The True Cost” or simply take a browse our Journal. Read our Sustainable Fashion Blueprint Report covering new trends, or head to our MAMOQ Dictionary to help you decipher all those impossible “sustainable fashion buzzwords” like OKEO-TEX and Closed-Loop! (….Once you’ve learned a thing or two, tell your friends too!)
6. Buy Less, Choose Well, Make it Last
These iconic words by Vivienne Westwood are a mantra of the sustainable fashion movement, and we could agree more. It’s pretty simple. Take a stand against fast fashion and over-consumerism by buying less, and investing in long-lasting quality pieces instead. A good rule of thumb is the 30 wears rule. If you don’t think you’ll wear it at least 30 times, then maybe it isn’t a valuable addition to your wardrobe.
7. Support Brands Doing it the Right Way
We are proud to work with over 70 independent fashion labels with sustainability and ethics at their core. To find style that matches your personal values, you can even filter your search on MAMOQ by our 12 Values. Finding style that matches your values has never been this easy!
