10 Questions with Kate from Tale Of The Future: Tradition Meets Modernity-MAMOQ

As part of our founder interview series, we speak with Kate Pietkiewicz about the Himalayas, craftsmanship, minimalism and more.

What inspired you to launch Tale Of The Future? Why did you want to work with Himalayan craftsmen in particular?

Launched in February 2018, Tale Of The Future grew out of a passion for sustainable design combined with a desire to promote traditional handcrafting in modern lifestyles. We, at Tale Of The Future, recognize that in the quest to bring out the latest and most trending styles and designs, the fashion world is often quick to overlook the impact it has on the rest of the world. In response, we have created a brand that offers ethically produced, natural and animal cruelty-free products.

By working with Himalayan craftsmen, our designs are able to integrate tradition and modernity. Tale Of The Future was particularly inspired by the ability of these communities to maintain unique handcrafting traditions across generations. Based on the integration of old manufacturing traditions and modern ethical production, Tale Of The Future also seeks to use international cooperation to support the artists and artisans across the region by encouraging the spirit of craftsmanship where they reside.

Why did you choose this name, Tale Of The Future?

The name Tale Of The Future represents the core value of the brand - a place where old manufacturing traditions meet ethical modern production. Our brand draws inspiration from the wisdom of long-held traditions to create contemporary and minimalistic designs in line with current trends.

The collection celebrates Himalayan craftsmen, yet has a very modern design. Where do you get your design inspiration?

Our design inspiration combines the ingenuity of Himalayan craftsmen with our passion for simplicity and nature. Tale Of The Future designs promote the work of Himalayan craftsmen by integrating them into modern minimalism.

What impact do you think Tale Of The Future has on the craftsmen you work with?

Tale Of The Future is proud to encourage and support the unique traditions of craftsmanship with the artists we work with. However, each product not only helps artisans to use their skills but the support received also helps them to earn a living, support their families and ultimately, improve their lives and livelihoods.

Ethical fashion is an extremely broad topic. What is your definition of ‘ethical fashion’?

Tale Of the Future recognizes ethical fashion as harmony between people and the planet. In other words, minimizing the impact on the environment while maximizing benefit for the people and communities we work with.

How does Tale Of The Future embody your definition of ‘ethical fashion’?

When working with craftsmen throughout the Himalayan region, Tale Of The Future follows fair-trade standards in all stages of production. Furthermore, all of our products are hand-made and cruelty-free using only natural fabrics and ingredients, such as azo-free dyes - significantly safer for our users and less harmful to the environment.

What do you consider before buying something new for your wardrobe?

Our ever-growing desire to keep up with the latest clothing trends is often limited by our budget but the same limitation also leads us to turn a blind eye to the impacts the booming industry of fast fashion has on our planet and its people.

When buying something new for my wardrobe, I acknowledge that every decision has an impact. The first thing I consider is whether or not I need the item - for me, less is more. When I do choose to buy an item, I strive to be a conscious consumer by choosing items that are long-lasting and eco-friendly.

If you were to celebrate the craftsmanship of another region, where would that be?

Tale Of The Future recognizes that where cultures and traditions thrive, the craftsmanship of all regions are unique and their ability to inspire is boundless. Whether its the traditions of Africa, South America or across Asia, Tale Of The Future is captivated by the diversity of genuine cultural art and traditions.

What tips do you have for someone who is trying to live more sustainably, and consume more consciously?

To begin, it's easier than it seems. Our everyday choices can contribute to a more sustainable and equitable world when we choose quality over quantity - in other words, buy less but buy better, with your impact on the planet and people in mind. To do this, shopping locally or support transparent brands are great ways to start!

How would you like to see Tale Of The Future grow in the future?

Tale Of The Future operates with sustainability at its core. First and foremost, we would like to continue to promote conscious and sustainable lifestyles.

As a brand, we would like to expand our cooperation with local communities across the Himalayan region and work with these communities to further encourage the cultivation of their crafts and cultures. Beyond that, we are exploring possibilities to support organic farming for common materials such as cotton.
